Each of these steps creates greenhouse gases that trap the sun\u2019s heat and contribute to climate change.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-021-00225-9\/\">About a third<\/a>&nbsp;of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is linked to food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest chunk of food-related greenhouse gases comes from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/111b7ee8-282b-42ff-ad95-cccecd90f8ea\/content\">agriculture and land use<\/a>. This includes, for instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>methane from cattle\u2019s digestive process,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nitrous oxide from fertilizers used for crop production,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carbon dioxide from cutting down forests for the expansion of farmland,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other agricultural emissions from manure management, rice cultivation, burning of crop residues, and the use of fuel on farms.<br>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A much smaller share of the greenhouse gas emissions of food are caused by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>refrigeration and transport of food,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>industrial processes such as the production of paper and aluminum for packaging,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the management of food waste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does food have to do with climate change?
